Benalmádena

Benalmádena is located about 20km west of Malaga International Airport and is situated in between the coastal towns of Torremolinos and Fuengirola.

Benalmádena – and the rest of the Costa del Sol – enjoys an average of 320 days of sunshine per year! That means that there is a great chance that you will enjoy sunshine at your stay here. Obviously, a lot depends on the time of year. Average maximum temperature throughout the year is a, very comfortable, 23ºC and average minimum temperature is a, bearable, 13ºC. You can expect the cooler weather during the winter months (December to March) with temperatures rarely rising above the 20ºC mark. From April onwards, you’re looking at temperatures of 20ºC plus, reaching the mid 30’s in July and August.

Benalmádena has a population of about 66.000 inhabitants. Benalmádena is one of the more popular tourist destinations on the Costa del Sol and is split into 3 main areas. These are the traditional and original settlement of Benalmádena:

Benalmádena Pueblo, the original village, which lies about three kilometres inland at an elevation of approximately 200 m above mean sea level. Its core consists of a typical white-fronted Andalusian village, although including numerous recent buildings in modern architectural styles. Most areas of this village offer breath taking views of the Mediterranean from Fuengirola to Malaga. The village attracts many day visitors as it has managed to keep its traditional Spanish village look with white washed walls, narrow flower filled cobbled streets and small plazas (squares) where traditional Spanish café bars reside. Many visitors enjoy the tranquillity of the village taken in a real taste of Spanish life whilst enjoying local cuisine and tapas.

The village is well supported by the local bus service and road trains that can take you to Mijas Pueblo further up in the foothills of the mountains and down through Arroyo de la Miel to the coast of Benlamadena, Torremolinos and into Malaga City. The village is home to Benalmádena Town Hall, Benalmádena Bull Ring, the butterfly park, Christopher Columbus Castle, an archaeological museum with locally derived artefacts dating back to the Bronze Age and the largest Buddhist temple in the western world.

Benalmádena Costa is an urban agglomeration on the coast and has a numerous and varied selection of hotels that align the beach front, the main road and side streets of this popular tourist destination. The main area of Benalmádena Costa lies between the award winning marina and the area of Torrequebrada which is home to Benalmádena’s only casino. Within this area there are plenty of restaurants, bars, clubs and entertainment venues that cater for many nationalities. Most of these establishments are situated on the main road, the marina and Plaza Solymar, previously known as 24hr square, offering up a very lively and late night life during the summer months.

The marina is not only a nightspot but a great place to shop and dine and it is also a very popular residential spot for the wealthier. The marina offers varied international restaurants and as well boat trips to sight see, go fishing, dolphin watching and getting a water taxi to either Malaga or Fuengirola taking in the beautiful coastline of the Costa del Sol. All the seasonal sea sports are on offer and other places of interest are the sealife centre and aquarium, Selwo Marina and Paloma Park containing a large lake and animals running wild.

It is also close to 15 golf courses that are less than 20km away.

Arroyo de la Miel (Honey Stream), originally a separate village, is in between the other two areas. It has become the main residential area, and is also the most commercially active. Arroyo de la Miel is also full of life during the winter months since many Spaniards and foreign residents live here all year.

It is a cozy and welcoming town with warm people, the atmosphere throughout this town is
impressively welcoming, many restaurants and cafes and all kinds of shops. Buildings, many of
them apartment blocks are tightly packed. It has attractions such as the Tivoli World, amusement park, and a teleferico (cable car) running to the summit of the 769-metre Calamorro mountain, which
provides panoramic views of the Sierra Nevada, Gibraltar and, on clear days, the Moroccan coastline.

There is also a Norwegian school in Arroyo de la Miel as well as several international. The school follows the Norwegian education system, and have 120 pupils who enjoy their school days here.
